Albrecht Bruck Hand-Colored Etching, Hamburg Nikolaifleet, Signed

A pencil-signed hand-colored etching of Hamburg's Nikolaifleet, attributed to Albrecht Bruck (1874–1964) — the prolific German etcher who worked in Hamburg in the 1900s producing detailed cityscapes for the Commetersche Kunsthandlung. The view captures a stretch of the Nikolaifleet canal lined with traditional Hamburg merchant houses in their characteristic stepped gable rooflines, with a church spire rising in the background and small craft moored at the water's edge — a quintessential old-Hamburg view rendered in Bruck's characteristic precise line work and quietly applied color.

Bruck was known for his tightly observed urban architectural etchings — vedute-tradition views of Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, and Polish and Silesian cities — printed in small runs and frequently hand-colored by the artist. His Hamburg work in particular is sought after for its documentary value: many of the buildings he recorded were destroyed in the Second World War, making surviving prints important visual records as well as fine works of graphic art.
