Antique 18th C Fruit Still Life Oil Painting Grapes Peaches Gilt Frame

A handsome late-19th-century Continental still life — a woven wicker basket spilling out a generous arrangement of yellow peaches, red-blush apricots, green and purple grapes, deep blue plums, with a small gilt-stemmed cordial glass at the front edge — all set against a warmly glazed dark ground in the manner that British and Dutch still-life painters perfected for the Victorian picture market. There is a partial indistinct signature visible on the canvas (upper area, see detail photos) — a good candidate for a Clare-circle or Continental specialist painter.

The handling is confident and traditional: ripe impasto in the grape clusters, soft modeling on the peaches, the wine glass picked out with a few sure highlights. The dark ground has aged to a warm amber tone that reads as proper varnish patina rather than dirt. The composition descends directly from the long northern European still-life tradition — Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Willem van Aelst, and their Victorian heirs Vincent Clare, Oliver Clare, and Thomas J. Harper, all of whom built careers on exactly this kind of opulent fruit assembly.

The period giltwood frame is excellent: a carved acanthus-leaf-and-bead profile with original gilding, some honest wear and a touch of gesso loss at the upper edges that confirms the age. Canvas is stable, no visible tears or major losses, original stretcher.
