An especially charming antique-style needlepoint carpet — wool cross-stitched on heavy canvas backing in the Aubusson-Portuguese tradition that has run continuously from the 18th century through today. The deep navy field is animated by a procession of small naturalistic vignettes: animals, butterflies, songbirds, and scattered floral sprays in mustard, brick red, ivory, and soft greens. A wide, scrolling red-ground border framed by floral cartouches and ivory guard stripes finishes the composition, with full short fringe at both ends.
Needlepoint carpets like this one were prized in 19th- and early 20th-century English country houses and Continental drawing rooms — soft underfoot, perfectly suited to traditional rooms, and far more graphically punchy than a flatweave kilim or a worn knotted carpet. The figural motifs give the eye somewhere to land in a way that purely floral or geometric weavings do not.
A piece like this works beautifully in a study or library, as a bedside or hearthside scatter, or — laid in a small entry hall or breakfast room — as a discrete moment of personality.
