Antique Weathered Terracotta Fluted Jardiniere, Wide Bowl Form, Encrusted Patina

An exceptional antique terracotta jardiniere of generous scale, rendered as a wide low bowl with deeply fluted ribbed sides and a stepped molded base. The earthenware has earned the kind of patina money cannot buy — chalky mineral bloom, lichen-soft surface encrustation, oxidation staining in deep umber and charcoal, and the soft warm-pink ground reading through where the surface has worn back. The form is classically Mediterranean: full, generous, architectural in its presence.

Pieces like this were the workhorses of European villa gardens — used for citrus trees, olive trees, hydrangeas, and statement seasonal plantings — and they age into something better than they began.
