Globe-Wernicke Antique Sectional File Cabinet, Quartersawn Oak

An exceptional early-20th-century sectional stacking file cabinet by Globe-Wernicke, the Cincinnati firm whose patented modular case-goods defined the look of the American professional office from the 1890s through the 1930s. Constructed of richly figured quartersawn white oak in the firm's signature Mission-era styling — a step-back form with a deep overhanging cornice top, multiple stacked drawer sections, and the brass hardware that collectors immediately recognize as Globe-Wernicke.

Globe-Wernicke pioneered the "elastic" or sectional bookcase and filing system: each unit a self-contained module that interlocks with the others, allowing a desk-side library or filing wall to grow piece by piece as the client's needs expanded. These cabinets furnished law offices, banks, and academic libraries across America for generations and have become some of the most sought-after antique office pieces — equally at home in a serious modern study, a designer's workspace, or as a sculptural storage statement in a loft.

The quartersawn oak shows the characteristic medullary ray flake that quartersawing reveals — beautiful patina with warm, glowing depth that no contemporary reproduction can match. Original brass label plates, escutcheons, and pulls present.
