Kunihiro Amano Japanese Sosaku Hanga Woodblock Print, Signed, Framed

A signed woodblock print by Kunihiro Amano (b. 1929), one of the most internationally celebrated artists of the Japanese sōsaku-hanga (creative print) movement. Amano hand-cut and hand-printed his own blocks in the postwar tradition that elevated the woodblock print from a commercial craft into a fine-art medium, and his work is held in the collections of the British Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Tokyo's National Museum of Modern Art.

His credentials are exceptional. Amano was awarded First Prize at the Italy International Print Exhibition (1968), exhibited at the 5th Switzerland International Woodblock Print Exhibition (1969), and won the Grand Prix at the Czechoslovakia International Print Biennial (1970). He participated in the Tokyo, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Argentina, West Germany, Paris, São Paulo, Krakow, British, Norway, and West Germany print biennials throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, was invited to the 40th Finland Memorial Exhibition of the Print Association, and held a one-man show at Tokyo's Okabe Gallery in 1972. Member of the Japan Print Association and Kokuga-kai. Original printed certificate from Hanga Gallery (Kyoto Handicraft Center) accompanies the piece.

Presented in its original framing — a clean dark moulding with archival matting that respects the work and complements both Japanese and Western interiors. Reads beautifully singly above a writing desk, in a study, in a reading nook — or as part of a curated grouping of postwar Japanese prints.
