A monumental antique Chinese silk scroll painting, historically mounted to a rigid board substrate for stable Western-interior display. The composition is a sprawling narrative scene — dozens of robed figures with conical hats traverse a stylized rocky landscape, converging around a central tiger being roped and subdued, with architectural elements (stone walls, terraced platforms) anchoring the corners. Executed in ink and color on silk, in the muted palette of aged classical Chinese painting: soft blues, ochres, deep umbers, and occasional coral accents on figures and garments. The silk shows the soft tonal warmth and slight surface gloss characteristic of period production; mounting to board was the standard 19th- and early 20th-century method for preserving and presenting large Chinese narrative scrolls outside their original hanging context.

The composition follows the Ming-Qing tradition of long-format narrative landscape with multiple simultaneous vignettes — the eye reads it episodically, picking up clusters of activity as it travels up the surface. At 89 inches tall and 48 wide, this is a serious wall piece — the scale, technique, and surface character all consistent with a 19th-century origin. Set into a simple bronze-toned wood frame. Old dealer/inventory label on verso reads "716042/01 Levit."

Condition is honest and visible in the detail photos: surface craquelure throughout, scattered losses, and a notable tear in the lower section (photographed close in IMG_2340-2342) — the kind of honest wear that comes with 150+ years of life. The damage is part of its character; the impact and presence remain undiminished.

Designed to dominate. Works above a console in a wide entry, behind a low daybed, or as the single anchoring piece on a tall stairwell wall. Pairs particularly well with mid-century modern furniture (the contrast is excellent), with traditional Chinoiserie interiors, or as the unexpected note in a contemporary minimalist room.

Dimensions: Frame 89 x 48 x 0.5 inches; image 85 x 44 inches. Substantial size — measure your space and access.
