A handsome pair of antique walnut side chairs in the Louis XV / French Provincial taste. Each chair features a shaped serpentine top rail with a finely carved central crest, a balloon-style upholstered back, and an upholstered shaped seat — both mounted on a sculpted apron and supported by cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and scrolled toes, finished at the rear with elegantly outswept legs in the period manner. Recently reupholstered in a heathered multicolor tweed that picks up the warm tones of the timber.

The Louis XV style — at the heart of mid-18th-century French cabinetmaking and revived continuously since — is defined by its sense of movement: serpentine curves, restrained carving at the points of greatest visual stress (the knees, the crest, the apron), and a refusal of right angles. Pieces in this tradition pair beautifully with both period and contemporary settings; the curves draw the eye while the modest scale keeps a dining room or vignette light.
