About the era. The Chippendale Revival was a major late-Victorian and Edwardian English furniture movement that revived the 18th-century work of Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) using period methods — hand-cut and hand-carved mahogany, traditional joinery, proper period detailing — for the great country houses and town dining rooms of the era. Edwardian Chippendale Revival pieces are widely considered among the finest English furniture of the 1900-1920 period; the cabinetmakers who produced them were trained in the same techniques their 18th-century predecessors used, and their work is genuinely difficult to distinguish from period Chippendale without close inspection of secondary woods, screw types, and construction signatures.
