A rare and important early 20th century American leaded glass pendant chandelier, 26 inches in diameter, attributed by Doyle Auctions specialist to the Unique Art Glass and Metal Company of Brooklyn, New York — one of the most significant American leaded-glass studios outside Tiffany Studios, and a name actively collected by serious American art glass collectors.
Doyle Attribution. This piece was reviewed by a specialist at Doyle Auctions (New York), who attributes it to Unique Art Glass and Metal Company of Brooklyn, NY. Documentation of the specialist's attribution is available to the buyer on request. This is meaningful provenance — Doyle's American Decorative Arts department is one of the recognized authorities on early-20th-century American leaded glass lighting, and an attribution from their specialist places the piece firmly within the documented American studio tradition.
About Unique Art Glass and Metal Company. Founded around 1901 in Brooklyn, New York by a group of Italian immigrant glass artisans, the Unique Art Glass and Metal Company (often shortened to simply "Unique" by collectors) was one of the major American producers of high-end leaded-glass lamp shades, pendants, and chandeliers during the great period of American leaded-glass lighting (c. 1900–1932). The firm operated through the early 1930s before declining during the Great Depression. Their work — characterized by quality hand-cut and hand-selected art glass, careful lead work, and floral design vocabularies — is now actively collected and traded at auction at Doyle, Sotheby's, Christie's, Skinner, Rago, Heritage, and Live Auctioneers. Comparable Unique Art Glass pendants in good condition regularly bring $3,500–$15,000+ at auction, with exceptional examples and confirmed-attribution pieces commanding premiums.
The piece. The dome-form shade is composed of hundreds of pieces of carefully hand-selected art glass — orange and pale-yellow daisy and apple-blossom flowers with red centers, set among deep green spear-shaped leaves and finished with a leaded sawtooth bottom border. The glass selection is the giveaway of serious period studio work: textured, mottled, opalescent, and rippled glass intermixed with smooth pieces, each chosen for the way it catches and refracts the light from the four interior bulbs. The lead lines are clean, even, and confidently drawn — the work of an experienced studio operating at the top of the American leaded-glass tradition.
Hardware. All original period brass and copper, with the soft warm-green oxidation patina that develops only over a century of use and cannot be faked. A hand-formed brass ceiling cap with scalloped flange, original brass chain in matching finish, a four-arm X-cluster socket bracket, and original turn-key sockets stamped "USA / 250V" — hardware unmistakably consistent with American lighting manufacture of approximately 1900–1930, and itself a meaningful rarity (most surviving period leaded shades have been re-hung on later or modern brackets).
A serious piece for a serious collector. This is a documented, specialist-attributed, single-owner-provenance early-20th-century American leaded glass pendant chandelier from one of the most respected studios outside Tiffany. Suitable for serious private collections of American art glass, museum acquisitions, and design-driven interiors where a single major sculptural lighting object becomes the focal point.
Use. Hangs beautifully as the central fixture in a dining room, an entry hall, a sun room, a stairwell, or a great room. Pairs naturally with Arts & Crafts, Mission, Craftsman bungalow, Victorian, transitional, or contemporary interiors where a single period focal point anchors the room.
Dimensions: 26" W × 25" H (top of mount to base of shade)
