W.H. Gispen Model 412 Cantilever Armchair, Dutch Originals, Charcoal Velvet, Chrome

An original W.H. Gispen Model 412 cantilever armchair, produced under license by Dutch Originals — B.V. Gebroeders van der Stroom of Asperen, The Netherlands (furniture makers since 1791). The maker's label is intact and clean (see photos), with production number 0855 stamped on the fabric backing. Gispen (1890–1981) is the cornerstone Dutch designer of European tubular-steel modernism, working in parallel with Marcel Breuer and Mart Stam; his Model 412, first drawn in 1934, has been in continuous production for more than four decades.

The chair is an exemplary example of the form: a single cantilevered run of hand-shaped chromed steel tubing, springy under the seat, terminating in the iconic black bakelite-style armrests with upturned curl. Reupholstered in a sophisticated charcoal-grey velvet (recently re-covered, tight and crisp) with piped seams and a separate floating headrest cushion. The chrome reads bright; the bakelite arms are unmarked.

The charcoal upholstery makes this a more contemporary read than the lighter velvets — works strikingly with modernist art, designer offices, and contemporary minimalism, and pairs beautifully against pale wood floors, marble, and mid-century walnut.
