The Welles is the table that put Hilton's spare British-modern vocabulary into a permanent register: a substantial solid American white oak plank top, hand-finished with a clear matte sealer that lets the wood read warm and tactile rather than glossy, supported on a slim black cast iron trestle base that floats the visual weight at the floor and lets the plank top do the talking. Each board on the top is matched for grain figure and dimensional stability — the cathedral grain reads beautifully in changing light, and the edges are eased rather than bullnosed in the British craft tradition.

Matthew Hilton (b. 1957, British) studied at Portsmouth College of Art and Kingston Polytechnic, opened his own studio in 1984, and has produced career-defining work for SCP, Habitat, Case Furniture, and — for nearly two decades now — De La Espada. The Hilton x De La Espada partnership is one of the most respected designer/maker pairings in contemporary European furniture, and the Welles in particular has become the firm's most-specified dining table at the design-trade level.

At 78.75" long × 35" deep × 29.5" tall, the table seats six comfortably for dining, makes a generous long desk for a home office or study, and works equally well as a commanding console in an entry, hall, or library.
